Academic Dishonesty

Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty. From the word ‘dishonesty’ we can guest it is a bad culture. Well, what is academic dishonesty? Academic dishonesty is any type of cheating that occurs in relation to a formal academic exercise. Academic dishonesty has been documented in every type of educational setting, from elementary school to graduate school. Today, educated society tends to take a very negative view of academic dishonesty. We often hear about plagiarism and cheating. Or may some of us ever do this when we are in elementary school, junior high school, or senior high school. Why we do this? Because we are student alright? It is like a culture in our school life. Now I’m going to tell you types of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty can include:
a.       Fabrication. Fabrication is academic dishonesty that generally does by scientist. Fabrication is the falsification of data, and information, in any formal academic exercise. A finding that a scientist engaged in fabrication will often mean the end of his or her career.
b.      Deception. Deception is providing false information to an instructor concerning a formal academic exercise. For example is giving a false excuse for missing at deadline. It also sometimes done by students who have failed to complete an assignment to avoid responsibility for doing so.
c.       Sabotage. Sabotage is acting to prevent others from completing their work.
d.      Cheating. When we have exam, our teacher or lecturer often says, “Don’t chit chat and do it by yourself”. Chit chat is part of cheating. Cheating is the most commonly of academic dishonest that students do when they have an exam. Cheating can take the form of cribbed notes, looking over someone’s shoulder during an exam, or any forbidden sharing of information between students regarding on exam or exercise. Cheating will damages the reputation of our program, hurts the morale of honest students and erodes respect for our instructor.
e.       The last but not the least is plagiarism.  Plagiarism is the adoption or reproduction of ideas or words or statements of another person without due acknowledgment. Do you remember the time when we are in the middle of OKK? The committees told us to make such kind of PKM. At the time we had a lot of plagiarist and the committees were very angry to us. Why? Because plagiarism is never acceptable. This is one of bad culture among the students. It will behave the students become lazy and make them become lack of creativity. Plagiarism can also damage relationship with students an instructor. If an instructor finds that you are plagiarized, he/she develop a serve of distrust. It is normally up to instructor to catch you begin the discipline process. On a simple assignment you may simply receive a zero on the work.

I’ve told you many kinds of academic dishonesty. But why is academic dishonesty considered bad? Here are a few ideas:
1.      Academic dishonesty makes student assessment unreliable. If a student fakes his or her own work, through plagiarism or cheat notes or whatever, the data doesn’t tell truthful.
2.      Academic dishonesty erodes the mutual trust between students and faculty. Faculty trust students to give true information about their progress via graded work. If a student cheats or plagiarizes, that student’s work is suspect for the duration — even if the student learned lesson and the suspicion is misplaced.
3.      Academic dishonesty assumes that the most important thing is GPA. In other words, the mind of the cheater is like this: “What really matters in college is my GPA. There is a lot of pressure to have a high GPA. Therefore I will do whatever is necessary to have a high GPA, whether or not it’s honest.” Well, it is the case that grades are all-important.
4.      Academic dishonesty is not in the long-term best interests of students. There is a net loss in the process of cheating or plagiarizing, even if you don’t get caught.
It is important to understand what motivates students to cheat to encourage students towards moral behavior. Below is a list of the most commonly expressed reasons for student’s academic dishonesty:
a.        Academic
ü  Semester workload too heavy
ü  Others’ cheating puts at disadvantage
ü  Professor/text did not adequately explain material
ü  Too many tests on one day
ü  The academic structural systems force the student to get high score. Grade is the important thing.

b.       Nonacademic
ü  Pressure from parents
ü  Job leaves no time for study
ü  Illness prevents adequate preparation
ü  Financial aid depends on GPA
ü  Good grades needed for job or graduate school

So guys, after we know about academic dishonesty and the consequence of it, let’s stop academic dishonesty in our culture. We have to stop, leave and remove all of academic dishonesty for our better education.

Different Types of Teachers

Students will have many different types of teachers during their school years. According to my experience, there are 7 types of teachers that I found during my schools. Those are: disciplinarian teacher, under medicated teacher, nice guy teacher, robot teacher, friendly teacher, ideal teacher, and lenient teacher. The first is the disciplinarian teachers. They are like worst nightmare for the students because they start class demanding no one say a word or get up for any reason whatsoever. Usually, disciplinarian teachers end class wondering why no one answered a single question and everyone went to the bathroom at their own desk. Second is the under medicated teacher. They are all fun. They are used to making anecdote in the class and go out of their way to get grab students’ attention, like having the class learns about human biology by crashing a surgical procedure. This type of teacher wants to see their students smile and make learning a pleasurable experience. They are not clumsy, as most people think them to be.  Rather, they are witty and bring in humor in the most subtle form. Third, the nice guy teachers, are teachers that admired by every student. The teachers let students call them by their first name and they never raise their voice, grade harshly or treat the kids as anything less than peers. Students easy to lost their concentration because they just look at the teacher. Forth, the robot teachers seem to sleepwalk through their day. They have no passion in teaching so they don’t care about the student whatever the students do in the class. The fifth is friendly teachers. As the very term suggests, they act like a friend for their students. A teacher-friend, in fact, combines both the guidance of a teacher and the understanding of a friend. The sixth is ideal teachers. The teachers are the one we respect from our heart. They act as a guide to the students, while not pushing them too much.  Such a perfect motivates them and boosts their morale. They try to encourage the students and refrains from criticizing them. The last is lenient teachers, who are easygoing and take things as they come. They are not overly finicky about things, such as doing homework on time or not sitting quietly in the class, etc. Such teachers very well realize that being strict with a child can only make him/her withdrawn. Whether we like it or not, most of us have to go to school, and that means dealing with a wide variety of teachers on a daily basis. Some are nice, some are mean, and some we believe to be just plain crazy. So, here I have some ways to deal with many types of teacher in general. First is follow the rules, especially those about respect, and you will be fine. Second, no matter how mean teachers may seem they still want you to be involved in learning. Third, don't be afraid to look them in the eye once in awhile. It shows them you are paying attention, and they will respect you more for that.  Forth, remember, while it's no fun to have to listen to a drone, it's no fun for a teacher to have to look back and see a class that looks like they've been knocked out. Fifth, beside that you have to understand that your teacher has made their career out of teaching their subject, so they obviously must have some interest in it. So, whatever the type of teacher, students must adapt themselves with the character of the teacher.

Crowd of FBS’s Lobby
I’m a student of the FBS. As a student of FBS I have a lot of assignments, I often do my assignment in FBS’s lobby to find free Wi-Fi connection. We can see the activities in the lobby started from the morning until evening, it makes the FBS’s lobby is always full of activities which make it very crowded. Look around; there are a lot of people with their own business there. The activity is not doing just by the student but also by the administrative of the campus itself. Same with me, many students use the lobby as place to do their assignments but sometimes they disturb the other people. They are too busy with their self so they don’t care with the other people privacy. For example, when the students use the Wi-Fi connection to other things besides to do their assignment they often find entertainment such as games and movie. It’s being noisy when the students playing games or watching movies and they also laughs and yells loudly to the extent that they disturb the other people. When use their gadget student will students will form groups while recharging their gadgets or when they doing their assignments but they pay no attention about their surroundings so the wires are everywhere. The student will feel uncomfortable there. Many activities do there. Many people will use the facilities here. That’s make the FBS’s lobby has a lack of facilities. One of them is the number of seat that is not suitable with the number of people there. It makes some students who doing their assignments prefer to sit on the floor because of limited number of seats available. While do the assignment some students will have snacks and they don’t throw away their rubbish in the rubbish bin.   And also many students just throw away their rubbish randomly or leaving many things behind so it makes the Dean, the lecturers and the staff angry. The limited number of also makes there are so many people who doing their activities at the lobby, some people just sitting on the floor and it disturbs the other people who want to pass by. In short, the FBS’s lobby becomes crowded because of the activities that do by the students and the staff of FBS itself. The students use the FBS’s lobby for many things, not just for do their assignment but also to find entertainments such as movies and games. But the activities that happen in the lobby make it turn into a messy place where rubbish scattered up over here and there. It makes us feel uncomfortable and makes the Dean, the lecturers and other staffs angry. We need to pay more respect to our facility so we will not get any problem when we used it we need to be more careful about our actions so that people will feel more comfortable when they entered the lobby.  After all, the FBS’s Lobby is ours. So it’s our duty and responsibilities to take care of it.
